- Habitat. What is the landscape that you’ll be using it in?
Will you be operating in a mountain forest or a desert? This will affect what color of rig that you select. There is no reason to pick a forest camo rig if you’ll be using it in the snow.
If you plan to use it in lots of different terrains, try and pick a more general camo pattern that will be useful in lots of environments.
- Comfort. Will it be comfortable enough that you won’t mind using it?
While military personnel are used to carrying large amounts of weight with minimal comfort, we civilians are not. Therefore, you should try to find a chest rig that has some comfortable straps built in.
- Features. What do you need it to have?
You want to make sure that the rig you purchase has everything you deem necessary. Some things that you’ll want to consider are:
- Size. Make sure that the rig you select is generously sized so that you can fit all of your gear.
- Pouches. The whole purpose of the rig is to carry two kinds of gear, magazines and medical supplies. The best chest rig would be one that has plenty of space for mags for your primary and secondary weapon (4-6), as well as medical supplies.
- Safety. A good rig should also be a safe rig. You want one that you can not only get on easily but also take off with the click of a button.
- Hydration. There are some rigs that come with hydro packs built-in. You need to decide if this is the right choice for you, as it will add some bulk to the rig.

1. Condor Tactical Recon Chest Rig
Of all the chest rigs we tested, this one is the best. It checks all of the features that we were looking for; it fits well, is comfortable to wear for a whole day, and has plenty of storage for essential gear. The fact that it comes in a variety of colors is also nice, as it allows the buyer to but the rig they need for where they hope to use it.
One of the last and most important points to mention is the price. While this was the most expensive model we tested, it is extremely affordable for the value that it represents to whoever is using it. If you are in the market for a great chest rig, we highly recommend this one!
Summary: While this was the most expensive rig we tested, it provides a great value. It has a variety of colors to choose from and provides its user with an outstanding means to carry their gear, all while maintaining a high level of comfort.
2. Condor Tactical Rapid Assault Chest Rig
This chest rig is very similar to the one that we selected as our top rated. It comes in multiple colors, has plenty of room for your gear, and is extremely affordable.
However, it does offer a few features that our top-rated does not. For starters, it offers four different color choices instead of just three. While this might not be enough of a deal breaker to make you choose this rig over any other, it does require mentioning. This extra color choice might be exactly what you were looking for after all!
Finally, it is also a bit smaller than the other rigs we tested. This could be a blessing, or a curse, depending on your body type. While someone with a small frame might welcome this size difference, a person with a larger body size would not.
Summary: This rig comes in four different colors, has plenty of storage, and is very affordable. It is made a bit smaller than other rigs, however, so please plan accordingly if you think this one might be for you.
3. Condor Recon Chest Rig
This Condor is again, very similar to the other rigs that we tested. However, while it does have some of the main components present (storage for six primary and secondary mags, padded shoulder straps, and quick release button), it lacks in one area in particular.
While the other two chest rigs that we rated above this come in multiple colors (3 choices for the Condor Tactical Recon Chest Rig and 4 for the Condor Tactical Rapid Assault Chest Rig) this particular rig only comes in the Olive Drab color that is shown in the table. If this is the color that you want, this is a great rig. However, if you are looking for any other color, this would not be the best purchase for you to make.
Summary: While this rig boasts many of the same features as the others that were reviewed, the fact that it only comes in one color might be a seen as a bit of a disappointment to some users.
